Proofreading
What is it?
Proofreading is the last step in the editing process, coming right before a piece of writing is sent off for publication. All previous stages should be completed, including the copy edit, and the document should be in its final design layout.
It’s important to note that a proofread is not a copy edit. Changes and suggestions to any text will be minimal.
At the proofreading stage, I’ll be looking at the following:
-
consistency and accuracy in all aspects of design and layout
-
successful transfer of all elements and text into the final design
-
accuracy and quality of images and captions
-
bad page or line breaks
-
design issues that occur in the text itself
-
any major errors or typos that might have been introduced or missed in previous edits
Who is it for?
Proofreading is for static documents, like pamphlets, magazines, posters, PDFs, and books that are going to be printed. Your document should have already gone through all stages of editing and layout.
What does it cost?
Proofreading can be charged on a by-the-word or a by-the-hour rate, depending on how graphic-heavy your content is.
For content that has a lot of illustrations and other graphic elements, rates are $35 per hour.
For content that is mainly textual, rates are $0.02 per word.
